Part of your roof’s style was determined by the architect or builder. Whether you have a gable roof , cross gabled roof, simple hip roof, pyramid hip roof, cross hipped roof, mansard roof, saltbox roof, gambrel roof, flat roof, or shed roof, there is not a great deal you can do about the shape of your roof. If you are interested in a major renovation, you can hire a contractor to change your basic roof style, but this can be very expensive. An easier way to make over your roofing is to change the material your roof is made from. Whether you switch from a copper roof to a cedar shingle or from a wood roof to metal, there are many modern roofing styles you can adopt:

1) Asphalt shingles. These are popular for their low cost and wide range of styles. You can buy asphalt shingles with tabs, color shading, scalloped edges, and many more features that can give you the style you want. Most asphalt roofs will last between 15 and 30 years.

2) Cedar roofing. Cedar shakes and shingles look wonderful and are a natural roofing material. When well-maintained, this sort of roof can last up to 25 years.

3) Laminated asphalt shingles. These shingles are made from layers of organic, fiberglass, or mixed felt. The layers provide a three-dimensional textured look that can imitate slate, cedar, or other higher-cost materials.

4) Metal roofing. Light-weight aluminum, steel, or alloy roofing is long-lasting — it can last 50 years or more – and is easy to install. In fact, most metal roofs can be installed over top of existing roofing materials. Modern metal roofs are popular because they offer so many style choices. You can choose from metal panels, shingles or tiles for your roof in a rainbow of colors. If you have an older home, you can opt for granular-coated tiles that imitate shakes or an old-fashioned tile.

5) Slate. Slate is actually an older style of roofing, but many homeowners still have slate roofs, thanks to the fact that this roof can last more than a century. This form of roofing is one of the most expensive to install.

6) Copper Roofing. This style of roofing is very popular in New England. Copper roofs cost more to install than many other roofing styles, but they will last for a very long and improve the resale value of your home.

When we start talking about roofing problems, the first thing we need to know about is types of roofs prevailing in the market and the pros and cons of each roof type. Whilst Roofing is constantly exposed to the elements, structural shifting, and stresses as well as chemicals in the atmosphere all take their toll on your roof. Aging occur on all roofs, wear and tear stemming from neglect, abuse, contamination, and accident can result in expensive repairs or premature failure of the roofing system, if not detected. A Regular inspection program will help detect minor problems before they become big ones, avoiding interruptions of work going on inside the building, and most importantly, protecting the owner’s investment and adding many years to the life of a roof.
Roof Types:
Wood: There are two types. Shingles are cut to a specific size and smooth finished. Shakes are irregular and rough-textured. Wood gives a natural look to a home. It also requires more maintenance to protect it from the elements.
Metal: Metal roofs have returned from the olden days to become a popular roofing option. Once limited to low-slope structures, standing seam steel roofs can now be used on steeper roofs as well. Metal is durable, practically maintenance-free, heat reflective and non-flammable. Installed in sheets, a metal roof will actually dissipate a lightning strike rather than conduct it.
Built-up Roofing: Built-up roofs are installed on flat or very low-sloping structures. They consist of alternating layers of felt or fiberglass treated with asphalt. These layers are topped with asphalt (tar) or aggregate. Built-up roofs are more common in commercial buildings.
Tile and Slate: These are two of the oldest roofing materials around. They are long-lasting and durable. Their weight requires a reinforced roof structure that can support them. Both can be quite expensive and neither is easy to install.
Slate Roofing: is a very expensive choice, but it’s very beautiful and distinct. Many Colonial and French homes look very appealing with this style of roof materials. Slate roof materials are heavy, as you can imagine, and will need additional structural support.
Factors that affect roofs
• Sun delivers a combination of ultraviolet rays and heat can prematurely age a roof.
• Snow or ice that melts and refreezes (called ice damming) pushes up the roofing material and causes leaks. Ice damming can be a temporary problem that ends when the thaw is complete. Excessive amounts can damage the roof and roof structure.
• Rain is normally kept at bay by a roof. But when rain or moisture gets underneath roofing, damage can occur.
• Wind can remove any roof in the most extreme occurrence. However even minimal amounts can weaken a poorly installed roof by letting dirt and moisture get underneath.
• Moisture from condensation underneath a roof not only harms the roof and sheathing, but also can cause problems inside of the house.
• Trees provide shade to help cool a house. They also provide leaves and limbs that can fall or scrub against the roof.
• Algae and moss get a foothold on moist surfaces. Excessive growth can retain moisture and cause eventual weakening of the roofing material.
Other Causes of Roof Problems:
• Improper Installation
• Improper Design
• Lack of Maintenance
• Flashing Failures
Each of these major causes of roof damage can be minimized by regular and careful inspection for early and minor problems. Immediate attention to any flaws or damages with competent repairs can help you avoid major damage to your roof and prevent the need for early and costly roof replacement.
Having a roof that leaks is a very common problem of many homeowners, especially if you live in an area that sees a lot of rain. When your roof leaks there are a lot of problems that can happen such as mold and mildew stains, damaged foundations, and water stains on the ceiling, just to name a few. Because of this it is important for you to have the knowledge of how to find the leaks in your roof.
When you do discover a leak in the roof you should not panic but simply know that it is time to fix the leaky roof. A leak can actually be a good sign as it will force you to check the leak and it is a good idea at this time to look over the entire roof to see if there are any other leaks or problems. Fixing a leak in your roof is not very expensive and it does not take a lot of time.
The Common Roof leaks problem can best be solved by using EPDM. It is compatible with all types of roof problems caused by sunlight, snow, moisture, rain wind and other causes etc. EPDM is the broader term among roofing material used for repairing, it includes liquid rubber. EPDM is compatible with almost all types of roof including flat roof, sloped roofs and other times of roofs mentioned in this article.

What is torchdown roofing?

Torchdown roofing is sometimes also referred to as rubberized asphalt and is the most common type of roofing to be used on flat roofs. The asphalt is melted onto the roof using a torch creating an impermeable roof that has an average life of between 15 and 20 years. It is ideal for flat roofs because of the protection it offers from rainwater that might collect on the surface. The cost is only slightly more than the traditional tar and gravel that is frequently used to cover flat roofs but torchdown roofing gives slightly better results. For an extra $1000 it is worth the extra, but there have been reports of several house fires being started because of the torches used in the process of installing the roof.

None of the noxious fumes associated with tar roofs.

Anyone who has had a tar roof installed on their house or anywhere near their house will understand comments regarding the hideous fumes that are emitted during the process. Many people even find it necessary to move out because of this smell often adding extra expense to the cost of fitting a new roof, however, with torchdown roofing this isn’t a problem.

What is torchdown roofing made of?

Torchdown roofing is modified bitumen combined with high quality resins. This combination ensures that you roof is completely impermeable to rainwater and is also resistant to otherwise damaging UV rays. It won’t melt and it won’t gather large puddles of rainwater so it is already weatherproof to a good extent. Torchdown roofing is extremely durable, the combination of asphalt and resin means that it is resistant to punctures and other abrasive damage. The strength and resistance of torchdown roofing means that it not only has a life of up to 20 years, but that that life will be virtually free from repairs except in the most extreme circumstances.

Coating your torchdown roofing.

For extra protection you can let your torchdown roofing settle for between a month and two months before coating it with an extra coating that will make it even more fire resistant and increases the protection from heat by further reflecting the sun’s rays.

Other uses for modified bitumen.

This durable, hardwearing combination of asphalt and rubber resin isn’t only designed for use as torchdown roofing either and is used to great effect on basements, verandas, foundations and garages. If you have a need for a weather resistant, flexible but very strong covering then torchdown roofing is the solution you have been looking for.

The cost of torchdown roofing.

The overall cost of torchdown roofing will ultimately depend on the roofing contractor you use to complete the work and the price of the actual components; however, it is only slightly more expensive than traditional asphalt roofing. In exchange for the small amount of money extra you receive roofing that is more resistant to weather and less likely to become damaged. This means that over its life it will cost you less in repairs; it really does work out cheaper in the long run to have torchdown roofing over asphalt roofing.

Everyone knows that you should have a home inspection performed on a house you wish to buy. A professional home inspector will outline any problems or repairs that need to be made so you can negotiate a price accordingly and finalize the real estate transaction with peace of mind. But when it comes to the inspection of the roof, what exactly is a home inspector look at? There are two basic types of roofs, pitched and flat. A pitched roof is normally built of a wood framework of beams joined at the top at an angle, a deck usually made up of plywood and a weather resistant cover. The singles (cover) are the one layer that keep your roof dry so they must be intact in order to protect against the elements such as rain, snow and hail. A professional home inspector will first do a cursory visual inspection of the roof. He will when go up on the roof to look for uneven shingles or a poor new shingles installation over old ones. Installing new shingles over old ones is not necessary a problem, as long as the work is done correctly. The home inspector will also check for sagging which could be caused by a damaged deck or a potentially more serious structural issue with one of the ridge beams. Any pealing, cracking or breakage of the shingles will be noted on the inspection report. An inspection of the attic will also be made to ensure that there is no water damage on the underside of the deck which would indicate water leakage. The home inspector will also look for appropriate roof ventilation. He will count the number of vents and the soffit and their overall placement to confirm that there is adequate ventilation. Warm air must be allowed to escape the attic to avoid moisture build-up and ultimately rot. In the case of a flat roof, a professional inspector will verify all the same elements as for a pitched roof with the addition of water pooling. The main difference between a flat and a pitched roof is that the flat roof is built to be water tight whereas the pitched roof is meant to have the water run off its sides. A flat roof should not have any ponds of standing water as it can breed insects and plants, which can ultimately damage the roof. With a flat roof, the inspector will look for any weak spots, visible cracks, blisters or corrosion which could compromise the integrity of the roof. Tracing the source of water damage from a flat roof may be more difficult as it may have started in one place but when zigzagged away and created damage somewhere else. Before you buy a new home, have it inspected by a professional. This will give you not only peace of mind about any major structural or mechanical issues the home may have but it will also educate you as what areas of house will need attention in the near future. Such as the roof.

The types of roofs used for homes are nearly endless and can be categorized by the historical and architectural style of home roof structure. Most people use special type of roofing material and the type of roof that you intend to use for your home. All the design and the built of your home are to be determined by the material that is applicable for various types of roofs.

However, there are even other factors, where the design and the type of the roof, will be used according to the local weather and the geographic condition where the house is located. The architect of the home depends on the condition of the weather and sometimes it also depends on the type of the roof use. You can use the roof for commercial purposes like building a warehouse or a strip mall building then the place will look more like a Victorian style home.

Apart from the above mentioned type of roof, there are even other types of roofing as well that largely pertains to the home design and the construction.

The flat roof: The flat roof, as the name suggest is just flat. They are easy to build and require fewer materials and manpower than building any other types of roofs. They are widely used for the purpose of commercial building. Though they are not so attractive forms of roofing but they still they are considered to be one of the unique sets of designs for style homes and multi-family residential places.

The Gabled roof: One of the classic of the gabbled roof includes two slopes that forms a rigid or a peak at the top. From another end, they look like a complete “A.” Gabbled types of roofing are braced properly for preventing damage or a collapse due to the high winds. There is also a triangular roof, in which gable allows rain and the snow to run off easily.

The Cross Gabbed roof: These kinds of roofing are features as the Tudor and the Cape Cod style homes. The cross Gabbed roof includes two gables that crisscross each other. Since this more of a complex architecture the roof requires more construction and therefore more materials and labor.

The Front gable roof: There are many gabled roofs where there are some gable ends on either side of the home. It is influenced from the styles of the Cape Cods and Colonials architecture where you generally found front gables.

Gambrel roof: There is also flattened roof in which the style refers to the Dutch colonial style homes and they are even common in many American Farmhouses. The gambrel roof looks like a bell and there is a triangular shape when viewed from the side. The gambrels may be at the front size or side facing.

Hipped roof: The hipped roofs are common in bungalows or on style homes where you can find sloping roofs and the low pitch allow the snow to glide down.

All of types of roofing are durable and resistant to different weather conditions and so you can choose anything depending on your cost factor and requirement.

If you are in the market for a cool roof to save you money in energy bills and to do your part in helping the environment, there are many options out there for you. Here are just a few products that are likely to grant you the best energy savings possible, while offering the greatest protection for your home or building.

Flat Roofs
If you own a flat roof, you are provided with convenient energy saving resources. Flat roofing membranes, unlike tar and gravel roofs, are reflective and are designed to save you energy and money. A flat roof membrane’s high reflectivity will help to reduce the amount of energy required to cool a building and keep it cool throughout the hottest points of the year. This decreased amount of energy consumption causes a lower amount of pollution to be generated back into the atmosphere and directly contributes to a cooler and cleaner environment, all while you save a little money. Some roofing membranes that are energy efficient include:

TPO

EPDM

TOPCOAT

TPO is an extremely relfective roofing membrane. Versico’s TPO membranes carry the Energy Star rating, and succeeded in exceeding the guidelines to meet that rating. TPO is solar reflective and has a thermal emmitance level of .8 to .9, depending on the color. Versico’s TPO is also listed as a CRRC (Cool Roof Rating Council) certified product. This TPO is also 100% recyclable, as well as made from safe materials that do not harm the environment. If you are looking for a roof that will naturally cut down your energy bill, and also succeed in helping the environment, TPO is for you.

EPDM is a truly sustainable product. It is diverse enough to fit the needs of virtually all of the different climates and building structures. For example, if a membrane is not thick enough in a cold climate zone, it will almost immediately result in higher energy output and costs for the property owner. However, EPDM is able to work with different climates to create an energy efficient roof for you an any location. Though EPDM lacks the reflectivity of TPO, it makes up for it in thermal performance. In fact, a recent study performed by the Department of Energy and the EPDM Roofing Association showed that ballast and paver systems (such as EPDM roofing) can save as much energy as a reflective or “cool” roofs.

If you are looking for a way to push your roof over the top in energy savings, TOPCOAT is for you. It is a roofing membrane designed to be sprayed over current roofs, whether it is a single-ply membrane or a metal roof. It holds the Energy Star rating for its solar reflectivity. It has the similar effect of TPO: it decreases the overall building temperature through it’s solar reflectivity and thermal emmitance. In fact, TOPCOAT can save you up to 50% of your roof’s original cost through energy savings. It also protects seams and joints from wide temperature changes that can negatively effect roofing performance.

Pitched Roofs
Even pitched roofs are following the global trend of energy efficient building products. Since most pitched roofs are residential, they have the potential to save your family from spending money on unneccessary energy bills, while still helping your house look good. They also qualify for a tax credit of up to $1500. Two examples of these cool shingles are:

GAF’s Timberline Cool Series

CertainTeed’s Landmark Solaris

GAF Timberline has introduced the Cool Series shingle in hopes of reducing attic temperatures, and thus reducing energy costs and usage. They are designed with a greater reflectance than tradtional shingles that helps to minimize the amount of heat leaking from your roof into your home. This shingle saves it’s residents an average of 7-15% of total cooling costs each year. In warmer climates, cooling cost savings may be greater throughout the entire year. These shingles are based off of the design of the #1 archetectural shingle in America, giving your home the beautiful look you want.

Certainteed Roofing has also come out with a ‘cool’ shingle: Landmark Solaris. This shingle contains advanced color granules that reflect the sun. This succeeds in reducing the overall roof temperature by up to 20% in the summer, saving you money and energy. Landmark Solaris is rated by the Cool Roof Rating Council, qualifies for credits and points in LEED, NAHB, and other green programs, and meets the ENERGY STAR standards for solar reflectance and thermal emission. However, perhaps the best feature of this shingle is it’s beauty. It doesn’t look like a cool shingle, but rather it is a beautiful architectural shingle that would look great on any home.

A skylight might seem like the easiest option for rooms that are cramped dingy and dark. In many cases, it is, but only if the right kind of skylight is combined with the right type of roof.

Fixing a skylight on the roof is not like placing a window in the wall. Most of us think only of the interior when we fix skylights. But, did you know that your first priority should be your roof, followed by the positioning of the skylight on the roof?

The shape of the roof is a vital to the selection of skylights. There are different skylights for sloped roofs and different skylights for flat roofs. Incorrect installation can lead to problems in the future. For instance, flat roofs are more susceptible to drainage problems. Flat skylights on flat roofs may lead to water pooling. That is why experts recommend the use of domed skylights on flat roofs. This promotes drainage. Skylights for low pitch installation generally have significant slope built into the design. Attention must be paid to such things before installing skylights.

Skylights are introduced into the design and architecture of the home to bring in lots of light, heat and warmth. But, what happens if there is a tall tree towering over the skylight on the roof? The very purpose of the skylight is defeated.

The position of the skylight on the roof plays a vital role in determining its usefulness and effectiveness. There must be a clear opening in the area where the skylight is to be placed. A skylight that faces the East lets in plenty of morning sunshine, while one that faces the West brings lets in the afternoon sunshine. It is important to know the amount of light and the type of light your skylight lets in. Afternoon sunlight can become uncomfortably hot if you live in a warm and dry place.

The size of the room also has a bearing on the effectiveness of the skylight on your roof. If the room is small, your choices are severely limited as skylights are best suited for large rooms. If you still want a skylight for a small room, it is best to opt for an elegant pyramid skylight. This gives the illusion of space.

The structure of the house is another deciding factor. If there are beams, pillars or pipes in the way, the skylight on the roof may not get the right amount of visibility. Making structural changes is not an affordable option in most cases. So, it is better to evaluate the room before you place skylights on the roof.

In most cases, skylights should be built into the house at the time of drawing the design of the house. In case skylights are introduced at a later point of time, care must be taken to ensure that they are placed correctly and installed properly.
