There is a wide variety of roofing materials that are used on homes today. Deciding on the roofing that is right for you depends on a number of factors, including the type of roof you currently have, location, climate, desired look, maintenance and cost. General contractors of roofing services could help you make the best choice for your roof but it’s always good to at least know the basics. Gutters come hand in hand with roofs, so here’s what you should know.

Shingles- Roof shingles are made with overlapping elements that can come in different shapes. This roofing material comes in several types of materials which are wood, asphalt, slate, asbestos-cement, ceramic, and bitumen-treated. Shingles give a traditional look to roofs, especially those made from wood and ceramic. No matter what shape your roof is, shingles would still be the most practical choice.

They are generally produced in a square shape and are often mistaken for another type of roofing material-shakes. Shakes generally have a shorter life span but are highly recommended for its environmental-friendly composition. Roof shingles are installed from the bottom or the base of your roof, upward. In estimate, roof shingles (except for wooden ones) could last you about 40 years. Asphalt shingles are the most commonly installed materials, according to roofing contractors.

Slate Roofing- People on a budget often avoid slate as a roofing material because it is the most expensive in the market-roughly $600 to $1000 per square. However, its quality, durability, and zero-maintenance factor is well worth the money. Slates are cut from slabs of stones which would explain their gray color, but you can have them color-treated today. This roofing will lasts for a century or more and hardly needs any type of maintenance. It is resistant to insects and mold formation, and it’s fire-proof too. The downside to slates is the expensive cost of repair in case of damage.

You can also buy synthetic slates, which is made from either a mixture of slate dust and glass fiber resin, or a combination of cement and fiber. Synthetic slate isn’t as brittle as real slate, and it generally has the same durable quality as the real ones.

Metal Roofing- Roofers would tell you that this material is ideal in forested, moss prone, or heavy precipitation areas. It is made of steel, aluminium or copper. Metal roofing is lightweight and is one of the easiest to install. Metal roofing is generally more expensive than asphalt roofing, but cheaper than tile or slate roofing. Maintenance is minimal and is also quite functional in terms of controlling the temperature in your house. In addition, design and color for metal roofing comes in an array of options since metal is easily manipulated. You can even make it look like natural wood or asphalt shingles.

However, metal is prone to dents in the occurrence of strong impacts on the material so be careful when stepping on metal roofing.

Gutters- The purpose of guttering is to efficiently channel rain water from the roof towards a downpipe which in turn carries it down to ground level and then into the drainage system. The important thing to remember is to regularly clear your gutters of any type of accumulation so you lessen the risk of damage and water-borne bacteria. Roofers generally install gutters, along with the roof so you can ask them what gutter material goes well with the roofing material you’ve chosen.

For installation of roof and gutters in the areas of Tampa, St Petersburg, Clearwater, and Lutz, contact Beacon Construction Services. They are a roofing company for roof installation and repair.

Roofing is something that every home owner needs to know something about, after all it is about the roof over your head and is directly linked to the quality of life in your house. Whether you are looking at for commercial roofing, residential roofing or some clean roofing fixings; roofing can be a moderate resolution. Everyone that has ever bought a dwelling knows how tremendous of an investment it really is. The ability to keep that investment so that it retains its value can be a major investment as well. It is necessary to assure that your roof top is in tip top shape. Sometimes this goal can be completed by administrating diverse kinds of repairs. These operations will typically suffice for a while. Sooner or later though; new roofing has to be applied. Some see roofing as an high-priced project that should be avoided; but wait can lead to an avalanche of soggy timber that will lead to troubles you don’t even want to think about.

Therefore, roofing is a rational settlement to prevent future day troubles from existing over head. When it comes time to get that roofing installed you want to pick out your roofing contractor very carefully. Of course you want to get the best deal for your money; but you also want to hire an individual contractor that will stand behind their work. You want a contractor that furnishes variety and independence from any particular brand or product. You need a contractor that will be looking out for your best interests. Once found, their experience can help you in successful roofing.
Your friendly neighborhood roofing contractor will propose you about all the various types of roofing shingles that are usable for your project. Let’s explore some of those shingles that are commonly used today:

Asphalt Shingles – These are very cost friendly and quite general for most home designs. They are a breeze to recreate and can be found in many colours and mixtures. These fire resistant shingles come in many types and manufacturers.

Wood Shingles – These shingles have been recognise to last up to 50 years with correct care. Wood provides the raw look that many consumers look for. Being acquired from wood these shingles also provide a certain amount of insulation as well.

Metal Shingles – These shingles are typically produced out of copper, tin, steel, and aluminum. This product has a life span of at least 50 years. A functional, low maintenance product, this shingle comes in many colors and can be installed right over your old roof.

It is very important to get a roofing job done as professionally and as thoroughly as possible, since most people do not go about changing their roof every few years you may want to think of all the aspects of this project before you sign any agreement or buy any material.

Choosing the right shingles for Salt Lake City Roofing

The correct choice of roof shingles is very critical to the performance of the roof in extreme weather conditions. The choice largely depends on the general climate of the place, roofing material used in an existing roof, if there is one, and the prevailing local building codes. The personal preference and taste are often the most important factors in deciding the right shingles for your home. There are varied options available in the market in terms of durability of the material, looks, quality, color, shapes and finish to suit individual needs. The Salt Lake City roofing contractors in addition to its installation and repair services they can also advice you on the right material to use for your house.

Composition roof shingles

This is the most popular roofing material for construction of roof in Wasatch Valley these days. It is made from various substances, such as crushed rock, tar, thick felt and other materials mixed together to form a single section. This material has low cost estimate and is available in various styles and colors giving you a wide range of choices to choose from. It has excellent fire resistant properties. This can also be put above your existing roof. This is approved and the most preferred choice for Salt Lake City roofing in Utah as per most building norms.

Tile shingles

Tile shingles are suited for residential buildings in hot climates. They are quite strong, but their installation as well as regular maintenance is a difficult process. These tiles are quite heavy and therefore Salt Lake City roofing contractors use it only for houses that have a well built and strong structural base.

Cedar shingles

Cedar shingle have been in use for Salt Lake City roofing for a long time, but it is increasingly being avoided by roofers these days because of its poor fire retardant properties and regular cleaning required to maintain its appearance. Yet, cedar imparts a royal look to the roof and in that sense, it is unmatched by any other choice. Most manufacturers these days are making materials that look like cedar but which do not suffer from the disadvantages of this material.

Metal roof shingles

Metal is the most ideal option for roofs in areas receiving high snowfall. Due to its smooth surface, the snow slips easily on the surface reducing the probability of roof dent or its collapse due to the weight of snow deposits on the roof.

Shingles cover 80% of America’s homes, but they are far from being all the same. Today’s shingles come in a large variety of colors, styles, and materials to meet any homeowner’s demands. Before we look at the different types of shingles available there are some other elements we should first consider.

Climate – shingles treated with zinc or copper New York are resistant to algae and fungus. This is something you will definitely want to have if you live in a damp, humid climate such as Florida, or Louisiana.

Building Codes – In some areas local law restricts certain roof types. The number of shingle layers a roof can have may be limited as well. A quality roofing contractor will be able to help make this decision with you.

Roof Pitch – The slope of the roof is something else that will be a factor in deciding which shingles are right for your home. Again, this is where a qualified professional New York can help guide you in the right direction.

Roof shingles are made with many different kinds of materials to suit a large range of needs. We will examine some of the major types of shingles, what they are made of, and how long they will last.

Asphalt Shingles – Often called composite shingles; asphalt shingles are widely popular due to being lightweight and relatively inexpensive. They are made by permeating a fiber material with asphalt. Since the late 1950′s manufacturers have constantly worked to improve quality by utilizing modern synthetic materials. The newer fibers being used make synthetic asphalt shingles more fireproof than their organic predecessors. They also absorb less asphalt; making them lighter also. Both types are covered with various colors of ceramic coated mineral granules. This not only adds to the beauty of the roof, but also protects the roof from the suns ultraviolet rays and increases the fire resistance. Granules of copper or zinc are used to fight algae growth. Most asphalt shingles have spots or strips of thermoplastic adhesive on the bottom side. This adhesive heats up in the sun, creating a bond with the roof which increases wind protection. With a life span of 20+ years asphalt shingles deserve serious consideration when choosing a roofing system for your project. Visit http://www.madehow.com/Volume-3/Shingle.html for more details.

Architectural Shingles – While made with the same types of materials as regular asphalt shingles; architectural shingles New York offer a more refined look. With their attractive thickness they can be made to resemble wood shakes or slate. Architectural shingles tend to be a bit more expensive, but they are easier to install than some other types. It is not unheard of to find premium laminate shingles with 50 year warranties.

Wood Shingles – Are usually cut from cedar though some other woods such as pressure treated pine are also used. Wood shingles are smooth and uniform, but with a lot of variety in look because of the natural grain. Wood shakes are similar to shingles, but are left rough. This type of shingle should last for 30-50 years, but expect to pay more than you would for asphalt shingles.

Choosing roofing materials must take into consideration many factors-from the climate and weather conditions in your area, to the lifespan expected of the roof; from the cost of roofing materials to aesthetic preferences of the homeowner.

Choosing the right material does not have to be difficult as long as you know what you’re working with. Today, you can choose among dozens of options, from slate roofing, to concrete shingles, to metal roofing. Roofing companies can provide you with a list of options so you can make your roof according to your preference.

Comparisons of roofing materials, with the help of professional roofers, can help you keep your house cool in the summer, warm in the winter, safe of fire and harsh weather elements and a host of trouble you can spare. Different looks, colors and style can be attained by the use of various roofing materials, and more.

Metal roofing provides many benefits for homeowners who choose it for their roof. According to roofing contractors, metal roofing has become more popular because of its growing variety choices in terms of design, durability, increased fire resistant standards, weight and cost. As compared to other materials, metal roofing has the greatest flexibility and adaptability because it can be made to look like other roofing materials. Installation is also easy for roofers and general contractors. However, metal roofs can still get expensive since, especially those that have been customized.

Slate roofing may not be as popular as they once were years ago, but they still can contest the quality ad durability of any roof material today. Slates are dense, fine-grained, fissile rock, formed by the metamorphism of shale or clay, or more rarely of igneous rocks. They were one of the most common roofing materials in early societies in Rome and Greece. Slate is commonly bluish-black or gray-black in color, but red, green, purple, and variegated varieties are known.

The roofing slate market today is about one twentieth of its size a hundred years ago. The introduction of cheaper materials and changes in architectural fashion are among the causes for its decreased popularity. So is the cost of new slate roof installation. However, slates will remain at the top of the list for high-end homes with European-inspired architectural design. Slates will last a lifetime and are guaranteed to protect you from any rain, summer heat, and snow throughout its existence.

Shingle roofs are undeniable the most common in all American homes today. Roof shingles are roof sheathing made of individually overlapping elements, usually rectangular in shape, that are laid in rows to create a waterproofing effect. Roof shingles come in a wide variety of materials, including wood, asphalt, ceramic, slate, copper, tin, cement, plastic, asbestos, and fiberglass. At only $2-6 per square foot, metal shingle roofing is an extremely popular choice. Shingles are lightweight, durable, and flexible when it comes to design. However, since it is lightweight, it can get blown away in the occurrence of strong storms and wind. Also, regular maintenance and upkeep is required for a shingle roof, as moss, algae, and leaf debris will grow in between shingles over time.

When cleaning your shingle roof, make sure you also pay attention to the gutter. Gutters are generally installed with metal of asphalt shingles.

Solar roof tiles are an emerging technology that is replacing the bulky photovoltaic panels that have commonly been used to make solar power.. So what are solar shingles, do they really work, are they really better than photovoltaic panels and what can they do for you. These are a couple of questions you might be asking yourself.

Why are they better then traditional photovoltaic panels?

The main reason’s why solar shingles are better then photovoltaic panels is their small size, shingles are the same size as traditional shingles. The shingles appearance is a dark purplish hue, and they lay on the roof just like regular roof shingles. This means you will not have to sacrifice design and aesthetic quality by placing big panels on your roof. Also much easier to install, unlike with a regular photovoltaic power system the shingles are extremely easy and take a lot less time to install, with several models you can just hammer them to the roof .

So what are they?

Solar roof tiles also referred to as “solar shingles”, or “building-integrated photovoltaic” BIPVs for short, they were introduced in 2005, which means that solar shingles are a relatively new area of green energy. Several companies are producing the solar shingles and prices are dropping due to competition and further breakthroughs in the technology.

Should I know anything before buying?

Before purchasing solar roof shingles you’ll need to figure out if your house is suitable for photovoltaic power generation. A good roof for photovoltaic roof shingles. Their might also be zoning laws so you’ll want to check with the proper channel before you purchase your system.

How do they work?

The solar shingles are shingles made with the same conversion process in solar panels. They are made up of crystalline silicon disks that are then attached tometal-conductors. light from the sun is then caught by the solar cells within the shingles which then transform the power into DC voltage, an inverter is then used to change the energy into AC which is what your house and appliances use to operate. The solar shingles are quite a bit smaller and less cumbersome then traditional photovoltaic panels.

Can photovoltaic roof shingles help me?

Photovoltaic roof tiles generate green energy, which means you will not be relying as much on dirty power generation such as coal, nuclear, or gas. Plus the energy they generate is free meaning you’ll be paying much less for your electricity. you will also be able to make money back because most systems are integrated into the electricity grid, which enables you to sell excess energy back to the utilities. Furthermore most shingles come with a 20 year warranty, while some say they’ll make it to 50 years. Because of this you’ll be saving even more due to the fact you will not need to replace damaged regular shingles. You can also find government run incentive programs that will help with the expense of installing a new photovoltaic system.

The Evolution of Wood Shingles
by Roof101 – Wood was used for all construction purposes from the early days of American settlement in the 17th century. Wood shingles – lightweight and simple to install – have largely kept their popularity for the centuries to follow. New wood shingles can be designed in different patterns, shapes, sizes and exposure lengths to fit with English, German, Dutch and other styles. With wooden shingles each building looks unique.

History of Wood Shingles
The wood that was used in the past was usually the wood found in the region the home was built. This dependency on local woods contributed to the variety of wood shingles, as did the hand-techniques of using only the inner, heartwood section of the logs for better quality wood, smoothing the wood shingle pine on a shavinghorse to make them fit evenly on the roof. Only later, with steam-powered saw mills, did wood shingles become more uniform. This is the time that Carpenter and Queen Anne architectural styles developed. Even though wood shingles are flammable and other roof shingles are widely available, wooden shingles have remained with us to this day. Today’s undressed wood shingles, their rough surface looking historic, are in fact a modern style.

Wood Shingles and Shakes
Wood shingles that are rough and rustic are called shakes. They come in varying sizes and lengths of 16, 18 and 24 inches. Nailing wood shingles is done in a way that enables air circulation, while shakes are laid so that they form a tight surface. Both methods are devised to assure durability and resist decay. Treatment of wood shingles and shakes can slow down natural weathering processes, though expect a 1/4 inch or more to be lost over the period of a century. Wood shingles and shakes alike can be installed over previous layers of asphalt shingles or wood shingles. Furthermore, wood shingle roof repair is made simpler this way.

The most difficult part of repairing a roof leak is finding the source of the leak; where and how is the water making its way inside! There are a couple of techniques to help you find the source of the leak: one is nature – find the location on a rainy day or use a hose to simulate the rain! But know where the weak spots are will save you time in locating the leak.

The most common cause of roof leaks are transitional roof areas: chimney, skylights, vents, valleys and dormer areas. Quite often the flashing is not installed correctly. Flashing is sheet metal installed at any transition point on an asphalt shingled roof to prevent leaks. If the flashing is not installed correctly the asphalt shingle roof is vulnerable to leaking.

Another factor in roof leaks with asphalt shingles is the pitch of the roof. Gravity is what keeps the water rolling off the roof. If a roof has a low slope there is more potential for the slow moving water to be blown under the asphalt shingles. And there is always the potential of melting snow on a roof to pool at an ice dam area and be pushed under the asphalt shingles.

Repairing Asphalt Shingle Roof Leaks

Once you identify the source of the leak, repairing a roof leak can really be quite simple. If your roof leak is due to a low slope, you may want to consider applying a clear asphalt shingle roof coating. If you find a hole in the flashing then, you can take a piece of metal flashing and, slide it over a hole and up and under the shingle above. It should fit OK without using an adhesive. But you may want to consider a clear elastomeric coating to be sure the surrounding area is sealed.

However, it may be easier and more effective to apply an elastomeric asphalt shingle coating over the area that has a problem with the flashing. If you apply a roof coating you can extend the coverage area and seal a larger area at one time. As a preventative measure, you can apply the elastomeric coating to all the transition areas on the asphalt shingle roof and lower the risk of future leaks.

There are several roof coatings that can be applied to stop a roof leak. Roof coatings come in black, clear or basic colors. I prefer using a clear asphalt shingle roof coating, thus eliminating unsightly black patches or mis-matched colors.

When selecting a roof coating, be sure to know how it is applied. Some coatings are applied with a trowel and others with a brush, applying with a brush will make the job easier. Another factor with applying a roof coating is the temperature, some roof coatings can not be applied in cold weather! So check temperature restrictions also.

If you have problems with ice dams you may want to use a clear asphalt shingle roof coating around the roof edges where ice dams occur. This will prevent melting snow & ice from being pushed or pooling on the roof shingles. It is much easier to prevent a leak from an ice dam than it is to fix a leak once an ice dam forms.
